Master items

Master items are the priced building blocks in your database. Every takeoff and estimate pulls its items from here.

General

  • Item Setup: Material, Labor, or Material and Labor
  • Item type, cost code, and manufacturer
  • Chained items: items added automatically to a component whenever this item is added (e.g. trim with ceiling grid)
    • Notion image

Calculation

  • Set how the quantity is calculated from your takeoff, e.g. by length, area, count, or height
  • Choose an installation method. Fields the calculation doesn’t use are greyed out.
    • Notion image

Sizing

  • Size method: No size, Sizes, Styles, Styles with sizes, or Mixture
  • Each size or style can carry its own product number, length, units per container, and weight
  • Item container: how the item is bought, e.g. by the piece, box, or bundle

Material Pricing

  • Set the cost per unit, piece, style, or container
  • The date shows when each price was last updated
  • Accepted vendor quotes can update prices in the estimate only, or in the database too

Labor Pricing

  • Set the production rate and the payroll classes and wage types used to price labor

Changes apply going forward: Editing a master item doesn’t change estimates that already use it. Use Sync with master item to update them.
